What's Up?

This is a poem I wrote sometime around 1992 or 1993.

I was facing the reality of being a single, custodial parent of children I love deeply. My dreams of moving up and getting rich were being replaced with thoughts that being a good father was far more important and ultimately less painful.

Trail of Dreams

I ride for the
trail of dreams;
it must be just ahead.

I’ve often thought
that I was very close,
and at times I’ve been very sure.

But the hard road of life
is full of illusions.
What seems to be opportunity
is a mask for problems.

And people do things
to themselves
that they would not do to others.

For the sake of sanctimony
glorify it as gallant -
true martyrdom!

When the smoke clears
and reality is seen,
we find our opportunities
for what they are.

And we cannot change the truth.
